Five Reasons To Choose Trail Running Shoes Over Athletic Shoes

Many people who enjoy walking or running outdoors wear the same running shoes they use indoors. This can be a mistake. There are fantastic shoes designed for trails that are lightweight and an excellent alternative to heavy hiking boots. Make your back country experience or ultra-marathon more enjoyable with proper footwear.

Rugged Soles: With non-slip heavy duty soles, trail shoes will provide better traction when walking on trails with various degrees of incline. Most athletic or performance shoes have a smooth sole, but when you’re walking on gravel or dirt you want something with a lot of grip to prevent slipping. This is of prime importance should you live in northern climates with lots of ice. Not recommended for heavy snow, trail runners are the preferable choice during fall and spring when the weather is fair but ice is still present in shady areas and upper elevations.

Debris and Dirt: It’s funny how this stuff can find its way into your shoes. If you’ve ever taken off your shoes after a long hike and found hits of leaves in your shoes, it’s probably because your shoes don’t have a gusseted tongue. A gusseted tongue is one that is attached to the shoe with flaps underneath your shoe laces. This prevents dirt and other material from the trail from getting into your shoe. For total protection, you can put hiking gaiters over your ankles and shoes.

Rocks: Trail runners are lightweight but have a built-in rock guard in the sole and toe so you can’t feel rocks through the bottom of your shoes. Even small rocks can be felt through regular runners. A good idea if your trail takes you through mountainous terrain. There are also added guards at the top and along the sides of the shoe to help stop the pain should you stub your toe.

Water-Proof: Trail shoes are made of water-resistant materials or at least materials that dry very quickly. No need to let a rainy day stop you from getting out and enjoying the fresh air while keeping your feet comfy.

Indestructible: Mens off road running shoes which are manufactured with heavier gauge canvas or fabric are less likely to rip or tear when your encounter rocks, roots and sticks. They are generally easier to clean and come in earthy tones that won’t show the dirt.

Avoid injury and sore feet by choosing trail running shoes, specifically designed for rough terrain.
